2024 Valencia, Spain Program

SHBS is thrilled to offer an opportunity in conjunction with the Valencia, Spain-based  community organization La Meridional. This program is designed to immerse students in the unique cultures and habitats of the coastal Mediterranean region of Spain, to broaden their personal perspectives about leadership and social action, and to develop connections across countries.

The program is guided by four main principles: Community Engagement: Using “the accompaniment model,” through the stories and  testimonials created through interactions with local active citizens, participants gain a better  understanding of intra-community relations with the environment and their impact on a global  scale.

Global Competence: La Meridional's Youth Leadership Curriculum is a compilation of  “gametivities” and reflections based on The Global Competence: knowledge, skills, attitudes and values applied to intercultural situations.

Connection to Land: The program narrative is born from the land our feet are walking on. The communities we partner with, the cultural visits, the activities... all is tied to the region we are exploring and its context.

Social Action: Back home, I understand my purpose and concrete actions I can take, as a socially responsible person. I will be better able to share my perspective, make changes, and inspire my community with my words and actions.

At the same time, such topics inevitably lead to students asking questions. Students also presented many common or abstract love processes that they and others have experienced, and Dr. Cailian also answered and analyzed the students' questions.

In addition to time in Valencia, the program also includes homestays in the small (c. 1,500 residents) village of Siete Aguas, about 35km from the city center. SHBS students will get to experience local life, connect with their Spanish peers, and have experiences with local education. The host families in this small village are part of a tight-knit community and are well-practiced in hosting small groups of international students, including a number of USbased exchange programs.
