About Us

School Profile

Located on a beautiful, ten-acre lakeside campus adjacent to the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao in Shanghai’s western Qingpu district, SHBS was founded in 2018 by a group of life-long international educators in cooperation with the Hongrun Construction group, a listed comapny.

Our residential campus offers state-of-the-art resources, including science and STEAM laboratories; an arts center with painting, digital arts, and ceramics studios; music practice, performance, and recording spaces; and recreational facilities for a range of sports, including basketball, tennis, tai chi, golf, and crew. With GIA’s values of dignity, honor, respect, and integrity, students’ personal and intellectual discovery is fostered through a rigorous course of study grounded in discussion- and inquiry-based learning.

The founder and Executive Principal of the school, Mr. Wenguo “Bowen” Chen, was one of the founding team members of the International Department of Shanghai High School. He now leads a team with diverse experiences in international education to carry out the daily operation of the school.

School Features

  • Core Curriculum Features
    b1icon7.svg

The school is authorized by the College Board of the United States and the Cambridge University Examination Board in the UK. It’s curriculum is based in American AP courses while Cambridge A-Levels are also an option; our curriculum is supplemented by a large number of preparatory courses suitable for students of different levels and interests. This creates a unique curriculum system that fully embodies the core idea of “the most suitable is the best.”

This system completely breaks the rigid curriculum arrangement and school system, and allows the courses to follow the students through a layered class system. Students can arrange which courses to study and at what grade level based on their own characteristics, preferences, and other factors, among a total of 100+ courses.

  • Dynamic Teaching

Teachers possess distinct characteristics shaped by professional development, hands-on experience, and personal reflection. They comprehend the various ways children grasp knowledge. Each child's cognitive approach differs; some are visually oriented, some excel in reading, and others thrive in discussions. Teachers utilize varied methods to suit diverse learning traits, ensuring an inclusive classroom experience.

  • School Culture
    b1icon9.svg

Tolerance stands as the cornerstone of our school's cultural identity. Within these walls, we embrace children of diverse characteristics and nurture a global mindset that recognizes personal and cultural diversity. Fostering an environment of acceptance, our teachers value each child, recognizing their strengths and talents, whether in academics, arts, or sports. Every child's forte is celebrated on our school's stage, boosting their self-assurance, and earning recognition from peers. Observing the growth of our students’ confidence is truly heartening.

Then, this confidence can broaden all aspects of our students’ learning and life, so that they develop a fuller, healthier, and more resilient sense of themselves. We witness transformation growth in emotional and relational wellness.

With the joint efforts of all people, forging ahead actively, sharing in joy, and helping each other has become the cornerstone of the school’s culture. Through a variety of thematic class meetings, student activities, invited lectures and other special events, the school has broadened the horizons of all community members. Being a member of such a community, we find respite from an often self-centered world in order to learn more about the people and world around us.
