Welcome to Building Shanghai!

"Building Shanghai" is an exemplary Project-Based Learning course, showcasing the distinctive practical learning approach at Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School. Now in its fifth year, this week-long, immersive, inquiry-driven program connects students to experts, businesses, public welfare organizations and government agencies to enable their understanding of the real-world applications of academic knowledge.

This year's theme is wellness, broadly defined: how do we as individuals, as organizations, and as a city, create the best possible opportunities to flourish?

Groups will tackle a ride range of questions, from alternative diets to the value of exercise and the management of fitness related business, from the intersection of traditional Chinese medicine and modern technology to the ways in which urban planning and design provide for a healthier city.

Building Shanghai uses questions as a gateway for learning, with the goal of expanding students' skills in areas that will be essential to their future success: planning and collaboration, applied research, communication with stakeholders, engagement with diverse perspectives, and the distillation of complex information. In turn, students have a wonderful opportunity to expand their sense of purpose for future study and work.

Building Shanghai also creates an invaluable opportunity for faculty collaboration and professional development, allowing SHBS teachers to experiment with interdisciplinary topics and a broad range of learning experiences.

For students and teachers alike, such open-ended independence generates innumerable opportunities as well as vital challenges, expanding the scope of their vision and demanding genuine problem-solving.

Groups will travel extensively around Shanghai, while a number of speakers will join us on campus, along with additional resources online. Indeed, we are grateful to the many, many individuals and organizations that make this remarkable program possible, a true testament to how our larger community values education.

Likewise, we've grateful to the many colleges and universities who have praised this program as offering students with the type of preparation they most wish to see in their applicants, based in their own school and as an essential part of their community.
