"Welcome to JFK Airport!" with the flight attendant's announcement, we officially began the three weeks of American summer school life. For most of us, this was the first time that we were so long away from our parents to manage our lives, which made us timid but more excited. Our itinerary contained two parts. We spent the first two weeks at HVA, a high school in Washington, and spent the final week on a university tour.
Surrounded by mountains, Highland View Academy has beautiful views. Before departure, we were worried that the first two weeks of school life would be boring and difficult, but the facts proved that we were wrong. Every day after class, we would go to the gym to play ball games, go skating, have BBQ parties, go shopping, watch the sunset, or just walk around, or go to the natural history museum to have close contact with snakes.

Lutz's outstanding teaching skills and ten years of teaching experience guided us to explore the complex systems and processes of the U.S. government. She helped us grasp the main points of the course quickly through her patient and careful explanation. Daily exit ticket assessments not only solidified our learning outcomes but also allowed us to get timely feedback to adjust our learning strategies. The mid-term examination was conducted in the form of debate and thesis writing, which not only tested our knowledge mastery but also exercised our expression ability, logical thinking ability, and critical thinking. Lutz paid special attention to cultivating our independent thinking ability. She encouraged us to analyze problems from multiple perspectives, express our ideas bravely, and strive to be the winner of the debate. This learning experience will have a huge impact on our future academic and professional lives.
第一次华盛顿之旅
On our first trip to Washington, we stepped into the solemn Capitol Building, a landmark in Washington, D.C. It is not only a symbol of American democracy and government but also a meeting place for lawmakers. After two centuries of wind and rain, the Capitol has witnessed the evolution of the American democratic experiment, and it not only carries the legislative function but also treasures the rich gems of American art, and itself is a model of architectural art.
Following the docents' steps through layers of security, we finally arrived at the Library of Congress, where the silence and solemnity were awe-inspiring. After a thorough understanding of the complex procedures and important issues in the operation of Congress, we deeply appreciate the extraordinary significance of this venue. Through consulting the staff, we learned that the current Speaker of the House of Representatives was Michael Johnson, which was slightly different from what we learned in class and stimulated our curiosity.
The next day, we bravely posed this question in Mr. Lutz's class, and through the teacher's answer, we thoroughly understood the confusion here. This is the charm of learning - constantly finding problems, and solving problems, so as to absorb new knowledge, and enrich the mind. Every question and answer is the deepening and expansion of knowledge, so that we can go further and further on the road of learning, and our inner world will be more enriched and abundant.
第二次华盛顿之旅
We went to the Washington Monument and the African American Monument and experienced very different historical and emotional journeys. Riding the elevator slowly to the top of the Washington Monument, we were once again overwhelmed by the solemness. Standing here, we overlook this architectural marvel made of stone. It has an exquisite design and the interior structure is breathtaking. Inspired by the Egyptian obelisk, the Washington Monument is not only a tribute to the permanence of ancient civilization but also a manifestation of deep admiration and gratitude for the founding father of the United States, George Washington.
In the African American Museum, we were soon drawn by the strong historical and cultural atmosphere. The museum is the only national museum dedicated to documenting African American life, history, and culture, with more than 40,000 artifacts covering art, slavery, the civil rights movement, and more. The museum building, designed by David Adjaye, pays tribute to enslaved African Americans with three layers of bronze screens.
Our group watched a film that showed the African Americans' struggle for freedom and rights, as well as their outstanding achievements in the field of sports. Behind these achievements are the tireless efforts and perseverance of African Americans. The exhibits are moving, each carrying the history and memory of the African American people, and deserve our respect and remembrance. This visit not only taught us about African American history and culture but also the importance of respect and understanding.
大学参观
During the last week of our trip, we visited universities in different cities together, which was fascinating and beneficial, opened our eyes, and sparked our thoughts: the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Lafayette College, Lehigh University, Princeton University, Rutgers University, Columbia University, and New York University. Different universities have very different environments, facilities, and learning atmospheres.

The State University of New York at Stony Brook is one of the most impressive schools for me. Stepping into its campus, the lawn is vast, the flowers are brilliant, and the sun is full of vitality. Ecological harmony can be seen everywhere: geese walk leisurely, and rabbits play happily. This shows its respect for nature. SUNY warmly welcomes visitors, showcasing the charm and philosophy of the university, inspiring a passion for exploration. The Charles Wang building stands out in striking red and white, with a suspended walkway leading to the lobby. Its waterfall-like openwork, zodiac wishes, and scattered coins of hope create a unique campus landscape.
Rutgers University is known for its red-and-black architecture and modern sense of technology, which is very different from Stony Brook. Its tall buildings and transparent glass design show a new style. The enthusiastic staff gave us manuals and sunglasses, and although the schedule was too tight for us to explore in-depth, the huge stadium was impressive. The handbook reveals that a high percentage of students at Rutgers University campuses receive financial aid, reflecting the school's care and support. The lack of time and in-depth exploration only inspired our desire to explore more.

Lafayette College impressed me because of the natural environment. In my eyes, it is the most beautiful college among the seven universities we visited. The varied architectural styles also captured my heart. The senior who led us at that time was also very friendly. It is difficult not to have a good impression of this school.

During the whole journey, interacting with the locals made me realize the reality behind the movie scenes. The trip was more than just a university visit; it was an opportunity to learn more about American culture. Although it only touched a corner of the United States, it provided a valuable perspective for my future school selection. On our journey, we are filled with joy and new expectations, but as the journey suggests, regardless of how much we long for or miss the future, cherishing the present and moving forward positively is the right path.
