【Chris校长在国际学校升学指导峰会演讲】
I’m very proud to celebrate all the wonderful offers that have been received by the SHBS class of 2025.
Every offer reflects a story of growth, of ambition, and of future potential for even greater achievement.
My pride also encompasses the ways in which our community – students’ peers, our faculty and staff, and parents – have supported and inspired this year’s seniors.

I know that there’s always a desire to parse numbers and compare offers between classes, but to do so undercuts the individual and unique characteristics of these wonderful students: we have valued them as full, dynamic, and complex individuals throughout their time at our school, so to compress any one of them, or their class, into rankings or statistics belies everything that matters most about who they are, and who we are as a school.
As a long-ago colleague once remarked, college admission is a match to be made, not a game to be won. The quest for greater self-awareness, the process of understanding institutions of higher learning, and discovering the best fit, undergirds our entire advising process.
Indeed, I’m particularly proud of the diverse range of schools to which our graduates continue to matriculate: they’ve found opportunities that will allow them to thrive.
As I’ve visited dozens of our graduates over the past few years, I’ve seen how well-prepared they’ve been for success. Just this past week, I was so heartened to hear from a college professor that one of our alumni was “the sort of student who I truly love to teach.”

I don’t see admissions offers as the end of a story, but rather the important beginning of a new chapter. Our students’ continued success, adapting in a new culture, responding to the rigors of university coursework, having the confidence to seize new opportunities: wherever their matriculate, this is the true test of their achievement.
That our students do receive a wide range of tremendously competitive offers reflects the true benefit of this approach. Rooted in the vibrancy of the SHBS community, with a breadth of distinctive experiences – from our Building Shanghai program to innumerable CAS activities, from our international exchange programs to our science research fair – they each have a unique story build on positive relationships and contributions to their school. I have been so appreciative when I hear from admissions colleagues that our students have a unique authenticity that allows them to stand out.

So too, college outcomes aren’t simply an individual student, or even annual process. They’re also a cumulative reflection of SHBS and our values, and the positive connections that have been developed over time to ensure the best possible recognition for our applicants.
SHBS is grateful, for example, to be an original InitialView partner school, and this year to co-host with Shanghai Soong Ching Ling School one of the InitialView spring college fairs. Through professional organizations, conferences, and visits to institutions around the world, we continue to ensure SHBS is well-known, and that our integrity and commitment to students’ success contributes to our reputation.

I’m wonderfully proud of our graduates, and am equally proud of how, in just six and a half short years, SHBS has come to be recognized as one of the best international schools not just in Shanghai, but in all of China. I look forward to continuing to build on this achievement, and to witness the success of our future applicants.
