"Building Shanghai" is an exemplary Project-Based Learning course, showcasing the distinctive practical learning approach at Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School. During the week of 13 November, SHBS students will embark on a range of intensive inquiry- and project-based learning programs that take them out of traditional classrooms and into the amazing city they call home. For this fourth year of Building Shanghai, the program theme is Global Shanghai—how has this city, shaped by over a century of connections between cultures and countries, continued to grow as an interconnected metropolis of trade, technology, culture, finance, and innovation.

Every group will explore an essential aspect of Shanghai’s diverse links with the world, with a focus on people, places, and experiences that have been shaped both by local influences as well as exchanges with elsewhere around the world. Sixteen project groups include: China’s role in the global gaming industry; the preservation of habitats against invasive species; the rise of e-Sports; Shanghai’s expansive culinary landscape; the city’s role as a shipping hub and global port; the manufacture of China’s first domestically produced commercial airplane; theater art, and more.

Students will discover how social, economic, and cultural influences, both local and from vast distances, interact to shape the world in which they live. They’ll do research, visit businesses, and speak with scholars and professionals from Shanghai and around the world—asking questions of people engaged in a wide range of work to better understand how their learning in school can connect to real-world challenges.

Students will engage in collaborative, inquiry-based work while they also develop their own purpose and vision, using their discoveries to create dynamic presentations to the SHBS community which, collectively, answer the question of how so many interconnected forces contribute to the ongoing project of “Building Shanghai.”
