Editor's Note: 2023 Shanghai SHBS School's Orientation Camp officially commenced on August 21st. This 7-day "Orientation Camp" includes courses and activities such as engaging English lessons, fascinating science courses, team-building exercises, double excellence program sessions, academic planning seminars, health lectures, business competitions, and so on. The aim is to help new students break the ice, foster friendships, become familiar with the campus, teachers, and curriculum, and adapt to the new environment and community more quickly. Let's take a look at how our new students felt on the first day!

Dawn cast its light upon the playground, accompanied by a gentle breeze. In the late summer morning, the chorus of cicadas filled the air. The vibrant campus opened its arms to welcome the arrival of new students.

Today marked the first day of the SHBS’s Orientation Camp! At exactly 10 o'clock in the morning, all students had taken their seats in the auditorium. The opening ceremony was hosted by Tony and Miao. The humorous speech by Foreign Headmaster Chris enlivened the atmosphere. Principal Liu gave a welcoming speech, extending a warm welcome to the new students. Student representative Bruce shared his experiences with confidence. Amidst bursts of laughter and applause, I gradually gained an understanding of the school's rules and regulations.

A gentle breeze rustled the grass, eliciting a dance in the emerald green tones of the lake. The midday sun sparkled as it bathed everything in its light. In the afternoon, students were divided into seven groups based on their English proficiency levels, and each group went to a different classroom to experience English ice-breaking activities! Teachers led the groups of students through various games using pure English: guessing celebrities, arranging sequences, solving riddles, dubbing... Through engaging games and enthusiastic discussions, once-strangers began conversing more and more, gradually becoming acquainted. The "ice-breaking" dissolved the barriers among students, transforming them from individuals into a united collective.

The evening clouds were brushed with a rosy hue by the setting sun, adorned with a golden border. As the evening sky darkened, I rested briefly in the dormitory and then strolled through the campus embraced by the delicate twilight, heading once again towards the auditorium. As students took their seats one after another, many held their speech manuscripts and whispered to themselves—everyone was nervously preparing for the imminent student cadre election of the orientation camp.

The election quickly began. Several candidates took turns to step onto the stage, some displaying enthusiasm, others exuding confidence and warmth, and a few with a hint of nervousness. Even those who hadn't had sufficient time to prepare delivered their speeches remarkably. Everyone looked forward to the announcement of the election results on the second day.

Stepping out of the auditorium, the moon shone high in the night sky. A gentle breeze swept away the clamor of the day, and the glow of streetlights illuminated the path back to the dormitories. The fulfilling first day of the camp came to an end, and ahead, there is still more excitement awaiting me!
