On the afternoon of October 28, 2024, SHBS held a grand English singing competition. This event not only showcased the students' English proficiency but also represented a perfect blend of music and language. The competition attracted many talented students who performed 15 wonderful acts.

The song selection was diverse, covering pop, rock, jazz, and more, fully reflecting the students' broad musical tastes and strong English skills.

The competition opened with Mr. Steven's rendition of “You Are So Beautiful”, a classic love song popularized by Joe Cocker, setting a warm tone for the event with its gentle melody. Next, Joanna performed “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara, conveying messages of positive self-awareness and body image. Mildred chose Charlie Puth's “Dangerously”, adding a mysterious and dangerous atmosphere to the competition. Aria’s performance of “If I Ain't Got You”, a classic R&B ballad by Alicia Keys, showcased exceptional vocal control and emotional expression.

The competition featured several creative choices. Luca performed “Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off” by Panic! At The Disco, leaving a strong impression with its lengthy title and avant-garde style. Iva's “Love You at 105” was a warm and touching translated version of a Chinese hit-song, cherishing long-term companionship. Leo's choice of “Peter Pan Was Right”, a track by Randy Newman for the film “Hook”, cleverly combined fairy tale elements with reflections on growing up.

Classic musical theater pieces were also featured. Martina performed “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music, showcasing musical theater skills with this cheerful song. Modern pop music was equally favored, Hayden's original song "4/5/6" demonstrated the innovative abilities and unique understanding of pop music by young creators on campus.

The event also included two outstanding duet performances. Jasmine and Allen collaborated on “City of Stars” from the award-winning film “La La Land”, displaying harmonious teamwork with this dreamy duet. James and Hugo performed “We Don't Talk Anymore” by Charlie Puth and Selena Gomez, leaving a deep impression with its rhythm and emotional expression.

This English singing competition was not only a display of language use but also a cultural exchange festival. Through music, an international language, students were able to improve their English skills, enhance cultural understanding, and cultivate artistic qualities. The competition provided a stage for students to showcase their talents and build confidence, while enriching campus culture. We look forward to more events like this in the future, offering students opportunities for comprehensive development and helping them grow into globally-minded talents of the new era.
