At the beginning of the autumn semester in 2023, SHBS provided a variety of vibrant and enriching elective courses to enrich students' extracurricular lives. On the afternoon of February 23rd, students gathered in the auditorium to listen to teachers' presentations on elective courses, with a total of 64 courses being introduced that day.
In the field of art, Amay's "Paint by Number", Liz's "Art History and Reimagination", as well as external teachers' courses on Chinese seal carving art and traditional Chinese painting, such as "One Fan, One World", led students to appreciate the charm of art. Ms Hu's rubber stamp making allowed students to express themselves creatively.
In terms of physical exercise, students could explore the joy of sports in physical education elective courses. Whether it was the elegance of swinging a racket, the excitement of rowing, the joy of galloping in equestrian classes, or the body stretching in yoga classes, students can all enjoy the pleasure of physical activities. In addition, the school offered various ball sports such as table tennis, volleyball, basketball, tennis, badminton, as well as martial arts, tai chi, taekwondo, mixed martial arts, boxing, bouldering, and other sports, allowing students to choose the physical activities that suit them.
In the academic and educational field, students could participate in courses such as "Introduction to Western Philosophy", Mr. Wang and senior students' "Silk Road Stories," Marc's "Student Literary Magazine", and Principal Chris's Current Events and Personal Essay. The school also provided exciting academic courses such as IELTS and SAT exam preparation, Japanese, French, and more, to meet students' academic interests. For students who need to take the AP exams, teachers have also offered preparation courses such as AP Music Theory and AP Chemistry Review.
The “Happy Orchard”, “Mind-Body Exercise Camp”, “Internet Thinking and Video Creation”, and other fun and creative specialty courses also made their debut in this elective course promotion. It is worth mentioning that science teachers have boldly ventured into the field of humanities as well. For example, Henry Zhang, a computer science teacher, brings “Stories of Chinese History”, and William Yu, an economics teacher, lectures on “Introduction to Western Philosophy”, injecting new vitality into the elective courses.
Furthermore, the school provided extracurricular competition courses for students with specialized needs, including the SRCC Robot Club, critical thinking competitions, academic explorations, and other related courses, ensuring comprehensive development for the students. SHBS always adhered to interest-based education and encouraged students, believing that the most suitable and interesting courses were the best choices. Through a diverse range of elective courses, the school is committed to providing students with opportunities for comprehensive development and allowing them to fully express themselves in their studies.
We hope that all students can choose courses they are interested in during the new semester and navigate through the sea of knowledge!
